An Introduction to Gestalt Therapy

September 2008

The following workshops are planned for the period October 2008 - July 2009 and we would like each one to run at least twice.

The number of participants will be in the region of 10 -12

At this time the expectation is to run these in Birmingham, being dependent on availability of a venue.

Please express your interest in any of these workshops by email to Gina or David

The Gestalt Self: Introduction

Perls, Hefferline and Goodman, in Gestalt Therapy: Excitement and Growth in the Human Personality (1951) consider the Self as poorly explained, defined and theorised in the existing models and approaches of psychology.

The Gestalt Self stands as the key difference in respect of other personality theories.

This workshop will explore the meaning of Self from a Gestalt perspective.  Theory and exercises are part of the workshop.

Participants need not be familiar with Gestalt theory.  My hope would be that, for such participants, this would be the first steps of exploring the Self.

Gestalt Contact and the Contact Cycle

The term Contact has a particular definition in Gestalt therapy and the contact cycle is often used as a means of explanation and of diagnosis.  This workshop will explore the meaning of Gestalt contact and how the cycle - sometimes referred to as the cycle of awareness - does and does not aid explanation

Participants need not be familiar with Gestalt theory although attendance of the Introduction to Gestalt would be beneficial.

The Sand Tray in the Therapy Room

This workshop is separate from Creativity in the Therapy Room because the use of the sand tray is, generally, a powerful tool of exploration with a client.  The use and generic theory behind this tool is explored and participants will have an opportunity to work with the sand tray.

Participants are expected to either be trained, or be in training, as a counsellor or therapist.
