M.
Death of Professor Maria Gilbert

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Professor Maria Gilbert. Maria was a valued member of staff at the Institute and was present from almost the inception of Metanoia. Maria worked as a teacher from 1986 and later as Head of Integrative Department until her retirement in 2018. She not only taught many generations of Psychotherapists, but was also a Coach, Mentor and much published author with successful publications co-authored with Ken Evans, namely ‘Introduction to Integrative Psychotherapy’ and ‘Psychology and Psychotherapy and Supervision’.

Sheila Owen-Jones, CEO Metanoia Institute

"It was sad to hear of the death of Maria Gilbert who joined Metanoia in its early years when Petrushka Clarkson, Sue Fish and Brian Dobson were almost the only staff.

She was born in South Africa of Africana speaking parents who, like her and many of her extended family, were strongly opposed to the national policy of apartheid. As a result she experienced house searches, phone tapping and police cars parked outside. She finally left her home-land with her son, Matt, like Petrushka before her, to escape this regime; but she left with a great warmth for the oppressed Black and other non-White fellow South Africans.
