Aggression enables us to risk and impact our world. It frees us to be creative or productive.
From a humanistic, relational and therapeutic position I want to look at the function of aggression in both preserving a sense of oneself and reaching out to contact the environment and consider the separation and meeting of Aggression and Love

The workshop will explore and question what it is that we carry with our roots; how this informs our identity and what of our roots and of our identity informs our personality. This will be an experiential inquiry into our own sense of roots, identity and personality.

This was a popular workshop I facilitated at Birmingham Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre during its own training days. If you have never thought about this creative approach to therapy then you will find this workshop fun, fascinating and therapeutically dynamic. The use of the sandtray invites a myriad of opportunities with your client including, regaining focus, connecting cognitive and affect, opening new explorations of client awareness, stimulation of memories, intimacy and touch.

Participants will have the opportunity to have an honest exploration of loving and being loved in therapy and what this means for the clinical work. Without denying love occurs we explore this for our self and for our client. Exploring from a relational perspective this workshop will consider how to not ‘run away’ or be shamed when there is love in therapy; and the workshop will explore how to arrive at the meaning of love and how to work sensitively and clearly in the therapeutic relationship.

In this workshop you will explore words and the meaning these words have for you. In this process you will be encouraged to expand on these meanings; to go deeper into yourself to seek the most accurate of descriptions that these words evoke in you.
What you experience on this workshop can be directly translate into your work with clients.

The expression of our thoughts and feelings is never only verbal. We express through our body and through our movements.
An integrated observation of what is seen, said, heard, noticed etc. provides us with extensive information of a situation. Often, at some point, this is verbalised. Sharing a common language provides for the verbal communication of our experiences. In this communication, we also share common sights, sounds, smells etc. Our verbal expressions mostly evoke imagery and we integrate into our verbal expressions. We creatively express.

Take a Saturday morning break and come along and explore what time away from your clients evokes. What is needed, if anything, by your client at these times? What is needed for you, the therapist? I see this workshop as providing an opportunity to reflect and explore the varying parameters that come into play with an interruption and as a holiday approaches

In talking about suicide we are also talking about death; we are also talking about an action that is considered to be one not made in the 'right state of mind' - when someone is not quite their self. We will consider this in the workshop. I want this workshop to allow you time to explore and reflect on suicide in terms of your own beliefs and values and look at how to support your client.

Much is written, talked, and presented on touch in therapy and I wish this workshop to share the experiences of touch. The difficulties and boundaries are part of the situation to be shared. How do you limit, or maximise, the client's use, or need (apparent or real) for touch. No one is obliged or required to engage in touch in any form, though I hope that the workshop will touch your heart

Gestalt therapy is often quoted as being about raising awareness. Ah, but, I say, awareness is not enough. Awareness alone does not lead to change.
